Thomas Lolan, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Tom's music and science interests intertwined from an early age. Drawn to the melody, he dove into the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music in 1967. While the academic path wasn't quite the perfect fit, his love for playing blossomed in ensembles like the brass concert band and vibrant weekend gigs. The pulse of the marching band and pep bands especially resonated with him.

Education soon claimed his focus. He entered the School of Education/Special Education, ultimately becoming a teacher of the deaf. Two fulfilling years at the Indiana State School for the Deaf cemented his passion for sound and communication.

Yearning for deeper understanding, Tom embarked on an audiology journey. Ball State University and then his return to the University of Cincinnati culminated in a Master's degree in 1975. Ph.D. studies beckoned, but life's melody took a different turn. Moving to Dayton, he honed his clinical skills under Dr. Nathanial Soifer. Children with learning disabilities and auditory processing disorders captured his heart, leading to years of research, publications, and lectures.

The pull of education proved irresistible again in 1980. Working with a multidisciplinary team, Tom dedicated himself to helping children with diverse needs. His dedication to hearing health extended to musicians, a path that eventually led him to go into private practice in 1985. By 1992, his vision had grown, culminating in the acquisition of South Dayton Hearing Aids & Audiology, where he continues to serve the community today.

Music never truly faded from the score of his life. Years later, a new trumpet reignited the music within him. Rejoining the Kettering Civic Band, he embraced the challenge of rebuilding his chops, taking lessons from esteemed teachers like Lawrence Wiley and John Harner. Currently, Tom plays in multiple local concert and jazz bands.  Sharing his knowledge became another passion, leading to talks like the one he gave at WSU's music education program on the importance of hearing conservation in music.
